AD9914 Reference Signal/Clock

Hi,

I am a novice designer, but came across the AD9914 and it would be very helpful for us to be able to use this device.

Is there a recommended method for providing a reference clock with the AD9914.  We will need to use the maximum 3.5GHz ref clock.  I found other discussions on here about using the AD9525, (http://ez.analog.com/message/67941#67941) which recommended using a 100MHz OCXO as the input to the AD9525, and using a 3.5GHz VCXO external to the AD9525.  Is the reason for this based on the fact that using the PLL will improve on the phase noise/jitter of the external VCXO.  Why wouldn't you run a 3.5GHz VCXO as the reference for the AD9914 straight away?

Thanks,

Chris
