What are the other purposes for Transformer/Balun at the input of the ADC other than Sigle ended to differential conversion. In the ADC based Data acquisition card, we are able to send differential signals directly from second board to ADC card. In this case do we need Transformer? The second board contains signal conditioning units and filters. In the absence of transformer, can we use resistor divider network to feed the common mode voltage from VCM pin to the input?
In some document, I read that the transformer is used to suppress transients from the LC filters preceding the ADC. Is it true? I need to know any disadvantages in non-transformer design and any care to be taken while doing this design.
Our sample rate is around 100MSPS.
