If the kit is not responding, how do I systematically find where the problem is?
It is quite a common issue that many users run into situations where the kit doesn’t respond or function as expected and this could be due to a wide variety of simple errors.
Here are some of the steps that can be followed to debug the issue:
Step 1: Check if the device is operational. To confirm that, you need to do the following verification: 1. Check if the VDD pin is powered up by the power supply. 2. Check the VREF pin. If it is not high, then the part is not powered up. 3. Check the PM1 and PM2 registers for mode select (when using ADE78xx or ADE7880). 4. Ensure if crystal or clock is attached.
Step 2: When you have ensured that the Step 1 is complete and still you run into problems, then check the COMS by following the below steps: 1. Check if the Evaluation software is running and the COM port is found. 2. Use a scope to follow the signals form the PC through the micro-controller to the ADE. Check if the signals reach the ADE chip. 3. Check if the ADE is responding.
Step 3: Ensure if you can read and write to the registers. If yes, then you are all set.
In this way, if you encounter a problem in any of the above steps, then you could distinguish the root cause of the problem quite easily.
