UART and Simulation

In VisualDSP++ I started the shell_browser example in the simulator. I was hoping to type characters into a console that would be passed to the simulated UART and get into the simulated receive buffer. I did not see a way to do it. Can it be done? I need the ability to do this to debug a program I am writing before hardware becomes available to connect to an emulator.

What happens now is I get this repeated to VisualDSP++'s console tab:

[Warning si1005] The system mmr <0xffc03d00> references a unit or peripheral not currently supported by this simulator.

Neither the menu items "Debug > Halt" or "Debug > Reset" stops execution. I have to kill VisualDSP++ in Windows XP's Task Manager.
