I would like to know if an USB protector with diodes for ESD protection (like usblc6-2 or others) can be safely excluded between the connector and the chips, when using ADuM4160 and ADuM5000. Thank you.
If I understand your question correctly, you would prefer not to use external protection for the ADum4160/ADuM6000 combination.
For the isoPower portion, it is protected by large amounts of high speed capacitance. it should not be an issue. he ADuM4160 has good ESD protection on the D+ and D- pins, we are conservatively rating it for 8kV contact. However external components like the usblc6-2 give much higher ratings >15kv. So what is required depends on what your ESD environment is expected to be. I personally would lean toward retaining the external protection because Murphy's Law applies.
I hope this helps,
