If you really wanted to measure the current then you could sense it by measuring the voltage across a very small series resistor (<10ohm) placed in series with the VLED supply and the pin supplying the IR LED. However, using the equation in the datasheet for the LED current you will get a result that is better than 10% accuracy. So unless you need better accuracy than that, it wouldn't make sense to bother with the measurement.
