Does AD9371 require front-end components such as duplexers and filters for small cell application? Or does it have enough computational power to carry out all the channel filtering in the FIR?
AD9371 is a wideband transceiver and hence there are no band specific filtering required as per spurious or out of band blocker requirements. .You need to have duplexer or any other band specific filters as per your requirement.
Apart from this one point to note is AD9371 does not have internal LNA and you need to add external LNA as (~ 22 dB gain) in the Rx front end , and PA as per Tx output power requirement.
Thank you for the quick response. As a follow-up question, for wideband applications (BW=100MHz), can the front-end be wideband and configure the AD9371 filters to perform the channelization/band limiting and then have the external FPGA for further post processing?
The filters are purely real (aka symmetric in frequency), so building bandpass filters doesn't really work. Plus the PFIR only has 128 taps. Channelization should be done on the FPGA.
The PFIR is generally just used to flatten the passband and remove out of band signals.
