I can say that the input can be audio, it does not have to be rectified since it still goes through the rectifier (absolute value) and through the rest of the sidechain.
You can rectify it externally and then set the internal sidechain settings to not interfere with the external settings but this is a little wasteful of MIPS.
What this pin is useful for is to filter the audio that goes to the sidechain of the compressor. Then you can remove the low frequencies or accentuate the frequencies that you want to reduce in the main audio path. Such as de-essing.

I am sorry this reply will be a little short. It has been a busy week and I could not build an example project quickly for you. I did attach this project that shows two uses of the external sidechain input pins.
What you are asking about is what is called a "ducker". This is where the signal will lower when a different signal is present on the sidechain inputs. So when the talking is there the background music will lower. So just drive the sidechain input pin with the voice signal and it will work. You will have to adjust the level of the voice going into the compressor to get it to lower the signal the right amount. Then set the time constants, the hold and decay to work well for your application. This is all simple to do.
