LED as photosensor

Question asked by john_smith on Oct 24, 2017

An article from Analog Devices indicates that LED can be used as a photo-diode, i.e. for sensing light. (Source: LEDs are Photodiodes Too | Analog Devices )

I was looking at LED drivers from Analog Devices, such as ADP5501, which drive backlight LED displays. Since backlight LEDs vary brightness dynamically, can the same LEDs which are used for illuminating the display - also be used a photo diodes/ light sensor, to sense ambient light and adjust brightness accordingly?

Or are there other backlight LED driver ICs which do not need a photodiode for ambient light sensing, and instead use the LED for light sensing also?

John
