BioZ is shorthand for bioimpedance (Z = impedance), which is a broad term for any impedance measurement performed on the human body. Different electrode placements and measurement frequencies can provide useful information about the user, such as:
• Respiration rate (breaths per minute). Measuring impedance across the chest at a mid-range frequency continuously over time shows a waveform as the user’s lungs fill with air and empty.
• Body composition. Measuring impedance at multiple frequencies gives you body fat, muscle mass, body water, etc.
• GSR (Galvanic Skin Response) / Skin Conductance. Measuring impedance across the palm, fingers, or wrist at a low frequency over time can measure signs of stress.
The MAX30001 was tuned to measure respiration, which is a subset of BioZ. MAX30001G is tuned for GSR measurements.
