Select Temperature Sensor

We have developed some RTD or thermocouple based temperature sensors, we are thinking to design some new sensors. Some question for AD temperature related products.

1. What is the difference between digital temperature sensor and analog temperature sensor?

2. For those IC datasheet, the measurement range is below +170 Degree, if the measurement point reach 200 Degree accidentally, will those sensor get damaged or just give wrong readings?

3. If we use the sensor to measure metal surface temperature, how to put the IC on the metal surface to make it more accuracy?

    1. Digital temperature sensors have a number of advantages over RTD's and thermocouples. They are factory calibrated and all errors and drift are included into the accuracy specification. They do not require any linearization, analog to digital conversion or amplification. They are generally cheaper and quicker to design into a system.

    2. For temperatures above the max ratings we cannot guarantee the reliability of the device. The packaging is the main issue above +150C. We offer an ADT7312 in bare die form which is guarenteed to +175C

    3. The best way to mount digital temperature sensors to a heat source is on flexi PCB. Digital temperature sensors conduct most of the heat through the pins and rear paddle on LFCSP package.

  • Hi Rob,

    Thanks for your reply. Two questions for ADT7312:

    1.The temperature is lower than +100C in our application, if the temperature reaches higher than +200 or even +300C accidentally, it will not get damaged because It is bare die, the only problem is the reading is incorrect, am I right?

    2.Availability: I check with the ADT7312 web page, no price is on the list, is this part only for high volume customer?  how much is the price?

    For temperatures outside the range of operation (-55C to +175C), accuracy data output is not warranted. Furthermore, notice that temperatures values higher than Maximum Junction Temperature Tjmax (175C) may result in permanent damage, so it is not recommended to go beyond that limit.
