The method used is called External Sampling Photoelectric (ESP) smoke detection technology. ESP replaces the internal chamber found in traditional devices with an optical smoke detector IC to detect smoke outside the device.
A company named Valor Fire Safety, LLC licenses External Sampling Photoelectric (ESP) smoke detection technology. Compared to traditional smoke detectors, ESP activates more quickly to smoldering and flaming fires but is less susceptible to nuisance alarms. Maxim supports only the physical layer, i.e. electronic design. The smart algorithm depends on the Customer themselves or our algorithm partner: Valor Fire Safety, LLC (“Valor”).
Along with Maxim’s sensor, customers need smart algorithms to detect the particles of interest. There is no sample code available but Maxim is partnering with Valor Inc. to develop state-of-the-art algorithms for smoke detection applications using the MAX30105.
