AGC and APD of adrv9009

Category: Hardware
Product Number: ADRV9009

I am trying to configure the AGC with an ADRV9009.In reference manual it is mentioned that :

The APD is located in the analog domain, prior to the ADC input. The APD functions by comparing the signal level to programmable
thresholds. When a threshold is exceeded for a programmable number of times in a gain update period, the detector flags that the
threshold is overloaded.

I want to know what does it mean when a signal exceeds the threshold once, and how long does 'once' represent?
How often does the APD compare the signal level with the threshold?

Thank you.
