Hello community!

In our application, we utilize LO1 for Rx1 and Rx2 with, e.g., NCO 15 MHz, and LO2 for Tx2 on a single ADRV9002. 

I am interested in a frequency error when Rx1 and Rx2 receives transmitted Tx2 signal on the same frequency. So, LO1 is set to (f_carrier-NCO) and LO2 is set to f_carrier. We tested that in the range of f_carrier between 300 to 450 MHz, it is usually below 1 Hz. 

Based on Device Clock, NCO frequency, Sample Rate and possibly further parameters, is it possible to characterize this error between LO1 and LO2 when assigned the same frequencies?

NCO frequency can be modified in our application (it could be variable above 5 MHz value). Can you provide a way/strategy to zeroize this LO1 - LO2 frequency error?

If not, could you describe the frequency error by a formula?

If not, would you expect this frequency error to be periodic, with respect to carrier frequency?

ADI does not provide any formula or guidelines for this behaviour if that's your question. Could you clarify how you measure 1Hz error, and your target performance? It'd be helpful you provide more details about your application along with your requirement.

I think that you understand correctly: Given that LO1 used for Rx1/2 with chosen (arbitrary) NCO at a specific carrier frequency, I would like to set LO2 used for Tx2 such that there is no frequency error in the baseband signal. This can be measured by transmitting CW signal on Tx2 and recording it on Rx1/2 in the block diagram above. Frequency error can be then evaluated on the recorded Rx1/2 IQ samples. If there was zero frequency error, recorded IQ samples should be perfectly constant. We do not have a specific target, just as low as possible.

    For communication between two IC's, frequency offset compensation is often necessary: evaluating a single IC, I hoped to avoid the necessity of this process in our system.
