ADRV9002 RX 2.8 kHz period spurious noise

Hello,

We are using TES0.26.0 to evaluate the receiving system.
When we operate RX with Zero-IF without setting the intermediate frequency or with a small intermediate frequency (approx. 10Hz or less), we see a kind of harmonic spurious at intervals of about 2.8 kHz from the input signal when we input a signal 1 kHz away from the carrier frequency.
Also, if we change the input signal frequency, the ~2.8kHz interval spurious moves as the input frequency changes.

Could you tell us what the cause of the above phenomenon is?
Could you please let us know if there is a way to avoid this behavior?

We have tested and reproduced in the conditions below:

  • ADRV9002NP/W1/PCBZ
  • Duplex: TDD
  • Setup: DMR (24kSPS, 48kSPS) or LTE (1.92MSPS)
  • Channels: Channel1
  • Carrier frequency: 350MHz, 900MHz, 2400MHz (both TX and RX are driven by the same LO)
  • Intermediate frequency: 0Hz, 5Hz, 10Hz
  • Signal source: Keysight N5172B
  • Input Signal: CW, -50dBm

    Following up on this. For applications like this we typically recommend using an intermediate frequency set-up which allows the device to use a digital mixer to fully down convert the data which results in cleaner data-output. Is there a reason you need to use Zero-IF? I will continue to look into the root cause of this in the meantime, but based on preliminary experimentation the spurs significantly decrease when an intermediate frequency setup is used.

    As I reported this also occurs in LTE profiles, this happens in the wideband use cases (≥1.92MSPS) as well as in the narrowband use cases.
    Therefore, it is difficult to avoid this problem by using intermediate frequencies.

    Could you please answer in terms of whether this receiver behavior is intended by design or not?

    Thank you for the quick response. Could you share more details about your configuration for the LTE profile that results in spurious behavior? A screenshot from that would help as well. To answer your question, this behavior can be expected at narrowband setups when no intermediate frequency is used, however I would like more clarification on the details regarding the wideband setup.

    I will attach the TES setup and screenshots (overall and zoom) for LTE profile.
    From the screenshots, you can see that 800-900 kHz bandwidth is affected by the spurious.

    Although the customer plans to use intermediate frequencies, it is not clear to what extent intermediate frequencies can be lowered without knowing the mechanism of this behavior.
    Could you describe the mechanism or root cause?

    From your statement, I can take it as if the bad SFDR of ADRV9002 would be a spec, but I hope that is not so…
