To aid in understanding of the software integration, we put together an example to show how this could be achieved. We decided to use the RaspberryPi in this example as it is a well recognised device and is quite simple to understand and use. This example is intended to show how the integration with a custom controller can be achieved relatively simply and that an expensive FPGA is not necessarily needed for an end application.
