passive frequency doubler (HMC-XDB112) for low input signal

hi,

an harmonic radar using zero bias diodes ad frequency doubler as in this article:

shows a convertion efficiency quite low (0.8% at a 30 W/m2)

do you think replacing diodes with MMIC passive frequency doubler (as HMC-XDB112) can improve performance of tag of an harmonic radar? (note that input power can be very smaller respect datasheet specs)

    for tracking bees with a radar a technique uses an harmonic radar (es: http://michaelwylie.wikispaces.com/Harmonic+Radar) where:

     

    - a marine commercial radar is used at tx emitting 100 ns long pulses of 9.410 GHz generated by a magnetron.

    - when tx illuminates a diode, the non linearity response of the diode act as a frequency multiplier 2x

    - rx chain has lna, filters and sampling of 18.820 GHz reply from diode

     

    this method is called harmonic radar because tx emits at frequency F and target and rx work at 2xF. At the moment the target used is a simple zero bias diode placed over a small wire with a loop (see images in the link).

     

    I was wondering if using (at the place of the diode) some other passive component (small enough to be installed over a bee) as hittite passive frequency doublers, (even if not designed for this application) can increase the conversion gain and produce more efficient targets

    You are aware that this part is not packaged(bare die)? For this type of application where weight and robustness are critical additional packaging and / or glob top will be needed.

    I don't believe the HMC-XDB112 will work for this application as it requires a nominal +13dBm drive level.
