HMC6505 LO Input

Thread Summary

The user inquires about using the ADF5355 PLL&VCO to directly drive the LO input of the HMC6505LC5 upconverter. The final answer indicates that the HMC6505LC5 is not recommended for new designs, and suggests using at least +2dBm LO power to avoid performance degradation. A plot showing the conversion gain drop with -2dBm LO power is provided.

Customer wants to use ADF5355  PLL&VCO and HMC6505LC5 upconverter. Can they use LO of AF5355 to input HMC6505LC5 diretly or would you recommend any other solution (amp) other than direct connection. Would be ADF5355 - 2dBm output power enough to input HMC6505LC5  LO , without too much performance degradation?

Thanks in advance.

  • Hi,

Firstly the HMC6505LC5 is not recommended for new designs (current status is last time buy). The translation part, HMC6505ALC5 is expected to release in the fall of this year. This part will have the same pin out and similar, though not necessarily the same, performance.

Please see the attached plot which shows the drop in conversion gain of the HMC6505LC5 when an LO power of -2dBm is used. There will be similar degradation in IP3 and other linearity parameters. I suggest driving the LO port at least to +2dBm.

    Thanks,
