HMC1065LP4E : NF@IF<50MHz

Hi All.

I have a question about HMC1065.

Our customer evaluated this device for Ka band FMCW radar.

At the lower IF frequency, NF has decreased by 6dB/decade.

Does ADI has detailed data?

Can this device be used under these conditions?

 

*Mesurement conditions,

  Lo in=2dBm, fLo=16.25~16.75GHz

  IF out =DC~

 

 

 

for X-band,  HMC905 is no problem.

    Our customer want to evaluate HMC524A (pre-release) if can't use HMC1065.

    Does ADI have detailed data on this device?

    The Noise Figure close to DC would increase as the flicker (1/f) noise increases. The HMC908LC5 and HMC1065LP4E are from 2 different processes so the noise figure performance close to DC will not be the same. However a 6dB/decade increase in Noise Figure seems too much-also the NF would usually start increasing around ~1MHz. I will try to replicate this measurement with our eval board and get back to you soon.

    I tested the HMC1065 NF from 50MHz to 1MHz. The NF was flat till around 10MHz ~around 3dB and then started increasing rapidly from 10MHz to 1MHz. I used a spectrum analyzer instead and observed the NF floor increase at IF1 and then IF2. The difference between the minimum Noise Floor (-174dBm/Hz +12dB Conversion Gain=-162dBm/Hz) and measured Noise Floor on the spectrum analyzer is the Noise Figure value.

    I appreciate for your support.

    I think there is no difference between customer's evaluation and you.

    However, customer's efforts and expenses may be wasted like this.

    Our customer need the detail infomation why does performance degrade at DC.

    Can ADI provide this answer?

    I think that it is difficult and need a deep investigation.

    And they expect HMC524A with LNA(HMC262 or HMC566).

    Can you measure the product under the same conditions?

    The noise figure degradation close to DC is due to the flicker noise effect. This is standard for any mixer. The amount of degradation will change between different processes but it will still be there. The HMC524A is still not released and going through early evaluation so we cannot provide that measurement yet. HMC524A is scheduled for release in Q3 of ADI's fiscal year.

    I appreciate for your support.

    I think that HMC1065 and HMC908 are the GaAs pHEMT same process .

    However, these two devices has different specs around DC. 

    So, I understood that it is difficult to control flicker noise for each product.

    It is correct ?

    I will provide this as a final investigation for customers.
