Low Frequency Useage

Category: Datasheet/Specs
Product Number: HMC433

I'm looking to use the HMC433 below 1 GHz with square waves and it's specified for DC operation with square waves. The input sensitivity plot is blank below 1 GHz on the datasheet though and I have some concerns about input power sensitivity

  • As you try to operate the device at frequencies below 1 GHz, it's all about maintaining the slew rate. This is the reason for the square wave recommendation. The sensitivity plot that stops at 1 GHz is for a sine wave input. I found some data that suggest that with a sine wave input at 200 MHz, the sensitivity changes from -15 dBm to -5dBm. This makes sense because you are losing slew rate. If you are using a square wave, my advice would to be make it as large as possible and ensure that its slew rate is as fast as the slew rate of a 1 GHz sine wave at its zero crossings.
