What are the oscillator signal (crystal) input requirements for the MAX41473?

Category: Datasheet/Specs
Product Number: MAX41473

I am designing an FSK receiver using the MAX41473, and I need its frequency to be very accurate. I have selected a 19.2 MHz TCXO, which feeds the XTAL1 pin (pin 9), as the datasheet mentions that the pin can be driven single-ended. The XTAL2 pin is not connected. The TCXO has a clipped sine wave output at 800 mVp-p, but my tests show that the MAX41473 does not operate properly with this signal. I have tried lowering the supply voltage from the intended 3.3V down to the minimum of 1.8V, but this did not remedy the situation. I would like to know the signal requirements of the receiver IC so that I can condition the TCXO output properly. The datasheet does not provide this information. Thank you.

  • Hello, I am looking into this.

Are you using a custom board? The evaluation board has an example design with the proper load capacitance. I will be testing our evaluation board and measuring the crystal output and repeating the process with the single-ended configuration.

  • Hello, and thank you for your reply.

Yes, I am using a custom board. I used the evaluation board previously for initial tests, and found it to perform very well, so long as the transmitter frequency was to be adjusted slightly to compensate for the measured crystal frequency. Our custom board uses the same overall circuit as the evaluation board except that the TCXO replaces the crystal and its load capacitors. Tests reveal that the MAX41473 is unable to function properly with the TCXO signal, and does not enter slaveRX state when instructed to do so.
