IF Port DC Coupling

I am new to RF design and I am trying to use the HMC220B 5-12GHz mixer. On Figure 5 of the datasheet, it has a small interface schematic of a shunt resistor, series inductor, followed by 2 shunt diodes. It says this is for DC coupling. My design's IF low frequency will be close to DC (100kHz), but not quite DC. My questions are as follows:

Should I just be using an AC coupling capacitor on this port and not use the resistor, inductor, and diodes? 

What is the theory behind using the resistor, inductor, and diodes? I haven't been able to find resources online about why you would want to DC couple an IF port of a mixer, and am curious of the reasoning behind this.
