Propagation Delay through ADRF5019

Thread Summary

The user inquired about the propagation delay through the ADRF5019 for a 6 GHz input clock to synchronize multiple boards. The final answer, verified using ADS to plot delay vs frequency from the S-parameters, indicates a propagation delay of 30-36 ps. The user's initial manual calculations were off by an order of magnitude.

We have a ADRF5019 with two possible input clocks of 6 GHz, where the source either comes from our board, or it comes from an external source which is synchronized to a larger system. What is the propagation delay through the ADRF5019, so we can calculate our ability to synchronize multiple board downstream of our own?

  • I think that you can calculate this from the S-Parameters. I picked a relatively low frequency  at which the wavelength is long enough so that there is no chance of the signal going through more than one cylce inside the part (freq is 200 MHz, Lambda is 1.35 m). If we convert the S21p value from the s-parameter file (-2.624 deg) to time, we get a propagation delay 36.4 ns. I check this at other spot frequencies and got the similar results (i.e. 35 to 36 ns).

  • A colleague spotted that my manual calculations were off by and order of magnitude. He pulled the s-parameters into ADS and plotted delay vs frequency which is in the 30-36 ps range.
