hmc833 can not locked

Category: Software
Product Number: HMC833

Hello,

The chip of hmc833 can not locked. The ref_clock is 100MHz. The ouput clock is around 5GHz, but not stable. It is shifting left and right.

The registers are set as below:

x"00000020" &
x"0F000081" &
x"02000001" & -- reference divider 2,1
x"062003CA" & -- bit7=1 to bypass;bit11=0 to disable frac part
x"095FF972" &
x"0A002046" &
x"0B07C021" &
x"0500e090" & -- (vco reg 2) 1 11 000001 0010 000
x"05001628" & -- (vco reg 5) 0 00 10 11 00 0101 000
-- x"05002898" & -- (vco reg 3) 00?0 10 0 0 0 1 0011 000 fundamendal mode
x"05002018" & -- (vco reg 3) 00010 00 0 0 0 0011 000 doubler mode
x"050060A0" & -- (vco reg 4) 01 10 00 001 0100 000
x"05000000" & -- (vco reg 0) - leave at 0
x"03000019" & -- int Reg; 0x32 = 50,25
x"04000000"; -- frac part

Could you please show me how to fix this problem? Thank you very much for your support in advance!

Best regards,

Howard

  • Hi Hao,

this part is on last-time-buy. So it's not recommended for new designs and as a result we will only provide limited support for the part. Are you using the device's evaluation board or a board that you built yourself? As a sanity check, can you try the register settings that are detailed in this EZ post.

(+) HMC833 can't lock after supply power off / power on at high temperature - Q&A - Clock and Timing - EngineerZone

This particular post is referring to a lock problem at temperature but the register settings in there should get you locked at ambient. Please give this a try and let us know how it goes.  - Eamon

  • Dear Eamon,

Thank you very much for your support and your information.

Sorry about my late reply due to the email blocked issue.

The board is built by ourselves.

The output clock is not stable when the temperature is low, just after power up the board.

Following the link you mentioned, I checked it carefully and tested the board again. The clock is not stable as well.
