Can the output sink current?

Thread Summary

The user inquires about the LTC5507's ability to drive a 4K resistor tied to midrail (2.5V) with a 5V supply. The final answer suggests the output is likely not capable of sinking much current, and recommends testing with an 8K resistor to confirm. The LTSpice model shows an ideal output, which is not representative of the actual device's limitations.

Datasheet says the output can drive 2mA.  It seems that is only for sourcing current, i.e the load is tied to ground.  I want to drive an opamp summing circuit, so the load on the LTC5507 is a 4K resistor tied to midrail, 2.5V.  The supply is 5V.  The output rises to about 1.7V with no input signal.

  • Apologies for the long delay in responding to you. I was not able to get any definitive information about the output structure of the device but my sense is that the output is not capable of sinking much current. If you increase the current to 8K and see that the output voltage drops, then I think that you have your answer. By the way, I did some testing on the LTSpice model and concluded that it has an ideal output. I loaded with with small values of resitance connected to 2.5V and to ground and in all cases, it gave the same voltage. My conclusion from that is that it's modelled as an ideal low impedance output that can sink and source lots of current. So it's no use to us for this case.
