AD608 sensitivity spec

Category: Datasheet/Specs
Product Number: AD608

Dear All,

The RF input specification is not fullly clear I would like to ask somebody help.

The RF impedance below 100MHz is ~3K Ohms. On datasheet front panel: RFin=-95dB to -15dBm (input stage limiting level) on 50 Ohms and for

linear-in-dB RSSI operation. It suggests if the part is used for RSSI meter 4uVrms is the ultimate limit.
In specification table: Mixer noise figure 11dB for "Matched input" condition. Does it mean an 50Ohm -> 3KOhm impedance

transformer was used, or with another ratio say 50Ohm -> 300 Ohm (I assume from aspect of noise a lower source impedance is the optimal than 3K input resistance)?

Regards,

Jospeh

  • Hi Jospeh82

Thanks a lot for the question. You have to match your input impedance to the mixer impedance at the selected frequency. Let's take Figure 24 for example. At 10.7 MHz the mixer impedance is ~3k ohms. That impedance is matched via R6 (imagine mixer and the 51.1 are parallel connected and together act as the load impedance) to the input impedance 50 ohms.

    Hope this helps

  • Hi Gokhan,
thank you for the clarification. I see, therefore for the NF specification no LC (50 ohm->3KOhm) matching network assumed but '608 RFIN impedance formed to Rg=50Ohm by adding R6 parallel 51Ohm resistor (in fact the "matching" is by the cable/source aspect only). Hence, NF=11dB noise figure is referenced to thermal noise generated by an 50Ohm resistor -> input referred effective noise voltage (Vne) can be calculated. Additionally, using the Rg value the equivalent input noise voltage (Vn) and noise current (In) - which produce together Vne- can also be determined. Using this Vn and In the NF (~sensitivity, for required SNR say 6dB) shall be calculated for other source resistances too.
I hope this thread is correct.

    Kind regards,
    Jospeh
