AD8341 IQ baseband voltage reference using REF19x

Category: Hardware
Product Number: AD8341

Good morning,

In a project I am using several AD8341 chips (9-16) and I am driving I/Q baseband controls single-ended.

I was wondering if, instead of using the voltage divider solution used on the evaluation board (fig. above), I could replace it with a single voltage reference using a REF19x, a suitable voltage divider, and an op amp such as OPA333 (here I'm using a REF192 and a 1:5 voltage divider, fig. below).

This design would in theory save me space on the PCB and avoid proliferation of trimmers to calibrate.

The actual signal ended IQ baseband signals would be provided by a separate DAC with 2 outputs.

My main concern would be how much current each of those baseband controls would draw from the op amp, I would have at the minimum 9x2 = 18 of those chips attached to the same reference. But there may be other issues I do not currently see.

Thank you in advance!

  • Howdy yall, I try to give myself some approximate answer:

    1) The datasheet of the AD8341 mentions the AD977x family of differential high-speed DACs.

Those DACs output a maximum current of 20mA, which in my case would mean that the 18 IBBM/QBBM inputs would draw 360mA from the opamp and fry it real quick.

    2) Another possible way to look at that is to assume a large input impedance for the IBBM/QBBM.

As a comparison, I chose (in a completely arbitrary fashion) another family of modulators from Linear Technology, which also require a 0.5V external bias voltage. In that case the differential impedance is 90k, corresponding to 45k per input, boiling down roughly to 0.5V/45k=0.011mA. The corresponding 0.2mA would be below the 5mA of maximum output current of the OPA333 so I should be fine.

  • The AD8341 baseband inputs should be relatively high impedance and not sink/source a lot of current - much less than 20 mA.  The reason the AD977x was chosen was due to its differential output and the common-mode voltage it could achieve.  The 20mA is the DACs' full scale current available, not what the AD8341 needs.

  • Thanks, I had the feeling that those 20mA were related to some power requirement of the high-speed DAC, but it's nice to have confirmation from someone more knowledgeable; thanks also for confirming the high impedance of the baseband inputs
