Voltage level for using signal generator to drive crystal input on MAX147x receivers

Category: Hardware
Product Number: MAX1473

I am interested in using a signal generator as the reference frequency source for a MAX1473.

A related FAQ question answers the connections: https://ez.analog.com/rf/w/documents/19315/what-pin-is-the-osc-input-so-that-i-can-drive-it-with-my-max1470-signal-generator-instead-of-using-a-crystal

What would be an appropriate signal amplitude, and driving impedance?

  • I don't think it matters critically.  I would suggest a 0.5Vp-p sine wave from an RF signal generator that has a 50 ohm output impedance.  Note the requirement for the DC blocking capacitor in series with the XTAL2 input, and the shunt capacitor to ground on XTAL1 input.  Both caps should be 10nF (not 1nF).
