Inquiry Regarding 71-86GHz FMCW Radars Technical Specifications

Category: Datasheet/Specs
Product Number: ADMV7310

Hi,

I am currently exploring FMCW radars operating in the frequency range of 60GHz/80GHz, with specific constraints.
I have experience with the Texas Instruments IWR6432 model, which serves as my reference point, and I am particularly interested in your 71 to 86 GHz radars (ADMV7310, ADMV7320, HMC7584, HMC7585, HMC8118, HMC8119).

I have some technical questions regarding your radars:

Raw Data Retrieval: Is it possible to directly retrieve raw data captured by the radar? If so, can it be obtained by connecting directly to the radar, or is the use of an additional acquisition card (such as the DCA1000 from TI) necessary? Additionally, do you have any sample scripts for real-time retrieval and recording of radar data on a computer?

Radar Configuration: The TI IWR6432 model operates by succession of frames, with each frame emitting a specific number of chirps. Furthermore, it does not allow going below a minimum number of chirps per frame. In my use case, I aim to eliminate the concept of frames and have a continuous succession of chirps. Is this achievable with your model? If the frame concept cannot be eliminated, is it possible to reduce each frame to a single chirp?

Calculation Disablement: The TI IWR6432 model performs calculations (Range FFT, Doppler FFT, CFAR, etc.) at each frame, which are not necessary for my purposes. Their model requires an incompressible minimum time lapse between each frame for these calculations. Can these calculations be disabled on your model? This question is somewhat related to the previous one.

Thank you in advance for your assistance.

  • Hi Camille. Thank you for reaching out regarding our E-Band product offering. Out product offering compared to the TI part you referenced is very different. You can think of our products as just the RF front end of the TI part you referenced. Such that if you wanted to use an FMCW radar using our devices you would need all other supporting circuitry like DAC, ADC, synthesizer and some other supporting circuitry to get the raw data you are looking to get.

As far as your frame inquiry, our part does not include that functionality. That will be included typically in the synthesizer that is used such as the ADF5610 that ADI offers.
