LTC6948 reference input level specification

Thread Summary

The user inquired about using the LTC6957-2 LVDS output to drive the reference inputs of two LTC6948 devices, concerned about the signal level. The final answer confirmed that this setup is suitable and suggested using reference input schematics from the LTC6951 datasheet. In a follow-up, the user reported issues with a 1.3 Vpp differential LVDS signal, including THI/TLO flags and a modulated output, but the solution did not address these specific concerns.

Hi,

I am not 100% sure of the requirement on the Vref+/- level (reference input level) when used with differential input. The datasheet states : 'A high quality signal must be applied to the REF± inputs as they provide the frequency reference to the entire PLL. As mentioned previously, to achieve the part’s in-band phase noise performance, apply a CW signal of at least 6dBm into 50Ω, or a square wave of at least 0.5VP-P with slew rate of at least 40V/µs'

As we will have two LTC6948 in our design, our plan is to use the LTC6957-2 (LVDS) output to drive the reference inputs of the two LTC6948. However, I am not sure if the level will be sufficient. Can you provide some insight on that ?

Thank you,

  • What you are proposing will work great.  The LTC6951 has a similar reference input to the LTC6948.  Any of these reference input schematics from the LTC6951 datasheet will work for the LTC6948 also.

  • Hello. Thank you for your reply. Now, we have a new design for which we use another device as a reference for the LTC6948. This device also generates a reference signal at 100 MHz and provide it in differential to the LTC6948. However, we have some issues now with the LTC6948 and we were wondering if the amplitude of this differential signal could be the issue. The amplitude is LVDS like but 1.3 Vpp  (so basically we use the differential LVDS as suggested but with 1.3 V pp) : could it be an issue ? Also trying to program the LTC6948, there are some flags popping up such as the THI or TLO) . We also observe from time to time a 'modulated' like signal at the output of the LTC6948
