10 W (40 dBm) power output amplifiers in 1-20 MHz band

Hello,

We are looking for amplifiers in 1-20 MHz band to output 10 W, we have found 2 such amplifiers in a close range– HMC8500 and HMC1099; they both operate in the  0.01-1.1 GHz range. We were wondering if the amplifier can operate below 10 MHz, specifically7 in 1-10 MHz range?

On the datasheet I read that both amplifiers are internally prematched to 50Ω, and external matching improves the performance. Would you happen to know how do the amplifiers perform when the output is mismatched? Would it just result in reflections based on the output impedance?

Thanks,

Sanj

  • Hi Sanjmehta,

We  have not investigated performance or whether the part will operate below 10 Mhz. I do know that it was a challenge to match at the lower frequencies. So you might not be able to match below 10 Mhz.

If it is not adequately matched you well get reflections and risk damage to the parts.

  • Hi Jim,

Thank you for the prompt response. When you mention matching at lower frequencies, is it internal or external matching. If it is external matching what kind of matching do you suggest for operational frequencies listed on the data-sheet?

    Thanks,

    Sanj

  • Hi Sanjmehta,

The device is externally matched. The attached pdf has the matching components circled in red.

We have not measured the part below 10 MHz. from the data we have the gain curve shows sharp roll off and matching gets worse.  suggesting the part will not work down to 1 MHz.
