It is acceptable to have a small external load on the VCC pin. For example the EVKIT for this IC uses a 10kOhm resistor on the VCC pin to act as a pullup for the /RESET pin which results in a ~0.5mA draw.
The VCC pin supplies the gate drivers within the IC so it is critical for proper operation that this pin is not loaded externally above 1mA.
