Connecting the SHDN pin to LX will result in an unstable signal at the output. if you look at the functional block diagram on page 8 you can see that the LX pin switches between GND and BATT like a normal boost converter, which will not allow the device to operate in a stable state. The datasheet recommends to connect the SHDN to BATT.
