MAX5035 and MAX17503 both parts have hiccup mode, why the output current is different?
MAX5035 utilize the thermal effect to protecht the chip when short circuit happened. When the die temperature exceeds +160°C, an internal thermal sensor signals the shutdown logic, turning off the internal power MOSFET and allowing the IC to cool. The output current keep stable that is possible the temperature of the chip does not reach 160Cso the hiccup mode is not triggered.
MAX17503 is different, once the current exceeds the current limit 4.3A (typ), hiccup mode will be triggered. MAX17503 suspend switching for a hiccup timeout period of 32,768 clock cycles. Once the hiccup timeout period expires, soft-start is attempted again. So you can see from the figure that the output current will fall to 0A immediatly in the datasheet.
