Page 14 is very clear that unused IN and OUT pairs should be shorted together. However, the output voltage range on the OUT pins is significantly higher than the absolute max. IN voltage on page 2. Does this not risk damaging this pin?

Figure 9 shows this connection.
On our board we use a 3.3V supply, hence the OUT range is 7.8V (3.3V + 4.5V) to 9.3V (3.3V + 6V). The abs. max. IN voltage is 3.6V (3.3 + 0.3V).
We have a rail that we want to be sequenced but not monitored, so we have shorted OUT to IN for this pair. In our setup, we have measured that this is putting 8.3V on the IN pin. Is this acceptable? If so, the absolute max. table is misleading.
The example on page 18 shows a 1 MOhm resistor used in series between OUT3 and IN3 with a reverse diode in parallel. Is this the preferred way of doing this?
