LT8714 datasheet is quite misleading as it suggests (page13) that in quadrant 2 and 4 power is fed from VOUT "back" to VIN. This is not correct. After checking the forums, I am not the first person to fall into the trap of believing the datasheet.
To compound the issue for me when I was using LTSPICE to simulate, this actually appears to be correct, because any attempt to change the "ideal PS" to a "real world" power supply to feed the LT8714 does not work for negative currents ie: quads 2 and 4.
after a wasted day i realised that the problem was that I had failed to notice that the ISN pin on the 8714 was netlabeled as VIN, which is ok, until you add a diode to your supply and then strange things occur. (because DIN is also the +ve of the power supply)
I relabelled the ISN pin as ISN, and dropped the same label on one side of R3 and everything works great now.
Some misleading wording in the data sheet and (in my opinion) a badly identified net label. Maybe ADI guys could rectify this.
