LTM8083 24Vout / 0.6A @ 5Vin

Thread Summary

The user inquired about using the LTM8083 to regulate 24V at 0.6A from a 5V input. The support engineer advised that the LTM8083 likely cannot meet this requirement reliably, suggesting the LTM8054 as a more suitable alternative due to its higher maximum output current at lower input voltages. The user was also directed to use LTspice for simulation, as LTPowerCAD does not yet support the LTM8083.

Hi ADI expert

In my application I required to regulate 24V with 0.6A load, from a 5V input. Can the LTM8083 operate in these conditions?

LTPowerCAD doesn't support LTM8083 yet, so I can't simulate how the moudle works.

In the figure, Vin=8V, Vout=24V, the red cureve show that the max current is 0.5A?

  • Hi  ,

There is an LTspice model for the LTM8083 so I recommend experimenting with the LTM8083 in LTspice, starting with the "example circuit" and then modifying to fit your application. The datasheet points out that "Maximum output current is determined by the input voltage. Higher input voltages yield higher maximum output current." It seems that your application is just over the limit of what this part can do, reliably. I would expect that if there was a curve for Vin=5V on the 24Vout Efficiency plot you shared, the curve would max out in the 0.3A-0.4A range.

Assuming that you do need a Buck-Boost and not just a Boost, it seems that the LTM8054 might better fit your requirements. The "Typical Application" circuit on page 21 of the LTM8054 datasheet looks pretty close to what you are trying to do. The product page is showing both LTpowerCAD and LTspice models too.
