Back to Back MOSFETs

Category: Hardware
Product Number: MAX16127

Hi,

I am planning to use MAX16127 in IO module for the Following requirements.

  1. Overvoltage and Undervoltage protection
  2. Thermal protection
  3. Reverse polarity protection
  4. Transient protection.

Can you please clarify the below details.

1. I understood during any of the above scenarios MAX16127 turn off the Back-to-Back MOSFETs.

Won't single MOSFET suffice our requirement? Why do we need two Back-to-Back MOSFETs? Can you please elaborate on operation of Back-to-Back MOSFETs?

2. Does MAX16127 support only to drive N-channel MOSFET (observed only N-channel MOSFET applications in datasheet)?

3. How does MAX16127 detects Reverse polarity and turn off MOSFETs?

4. In the application circuit below,

I understood the Zener clamp diode used to protect the gate of MOSFET.

During normal operation, Zener diode can go into Zener breakdown (correct me if I am wrong).

In the scenario where Zener in breakdown, will Zener current (Ig) also take part in Output current? (as shown in Fig. above)

Thanks in advance.
