LT8357 Boost controller design support

Category: Hardware
Product Number: LT8357

Hello,

I try to design a boost controller, supplied from a 4S Li-Ion battery to produce an output of 50V and 4A (200W max.). A buffer is already included in the values.

I use the LTspice model to simulate my calculations. At a "full" battery (16,8V) the design works fine.

But when I reduce the supply voltage, the regulator no longer reaches the voltage of 50V.

At an input voltage of 16.8V, the regulator supplies 50V and 4A.

With an input voltage of less than 16V, the regulator no longer reaches the minimum voltage of 50V at 4A.

At 12V I have to reduce the load to max. 2.5A to reach the 50V.

I uploaded the LTspice file at my google drive:

LT8357 - Simulation file

My aim is for the regulator to deliver full power over the entire input voltage of 12 - 16.8V. Can someone help me in my design?

Best regards

Bruno

  • Hello,

It seems that the selected mosfet is the reason. I have replaced it again. Since then it works as expected.

However, I have not yet been able to fully understand why. The main difference seems to be the gate charge. It is much larger.

Can someone please explain to me why the gate charge has such an influence at low input voltage?

    Thanks in advance
