Lt8640s burst mode ideal use? Can modes by switched on the fly?

Category: Hardware
Product Number: LT8640S

I'm trying to understand how burst mode should be used on the lt8640s.  Is the intention to use bust mode to keep currents low when you have very small loads.  If you have the mode pin hooked up to an external controller can you then change modes while the supply is enabled and switch from bust to forced continuous for example?

I just built a board with several of these and started out in bust mode but when I put big transient load on one ot shuts off for a few ms.  I switched it to burst mode and it no longer turns off.  Reading the datasheet better it says burst mode limits the high side switch to 900ma so thus I'm trying to understand how it should be used properly.
