4-Quadran reference design

Category: Datasheet/Specs
Product Number: LT3091

Hi,

I want to use 4-Quadrant topology on my design. For this reason, I simulated the circuit shown on LT3091 datasheet which I attach below:

On this circuit Vout min is Vee+Vdrop_LT3091 where Vdrop_LT3091=300mV. If I have Vee=-4.5V, Vout min technically is -4.2V. However, the simulation result show me a large ripple when I try Vout=-4V with Vee=-4.5V.

Simulation result implementing the circuit shown on LT3091 datasheet (GND pin tied to OUT pin)

However, If I tie LT3091 GND pin to ground instead of OUT pin it works fine. Simulation result when GND pin is tied to ground:

What is wrong? The formula  Vout_min=Vee+Vdrop_LT3091 or to tie gnd pin to out pin?

Thank you in advance

  • Hi.  I appreciate the input.  The LT3091 datasheet talks a lot about the GND pin connection in the Floating 3-Terminal Regulator and GND Pin Versatility of LT3091 sections.   I can understand why you are unhappy with the LT3091 datasheet Low Noise 4-Quadrant Power Supply reference design, but one of the sections I just mentioned does say that VDROPOUT increases when you connect GND to OUT.  I highlight that text in the image below:

  • Hi,

Thank you for the very useful answer Slight smile

Could I implement 4-Quadrant circuit tying GND pin to ground instead of OUT? I have simulated it and everything seems fine but I want to make sure with you this would be okey.

    Best regards.

  • Hi.  As far as I can tell, you are following the reference design correctly so your circuit should be o.k.  I just combined the datasheet text with the reference design in the image below.
