ADM7171 EN pin Short to Ground failure mode

Category: Hardware
Product Number: ADM7171

I've recently been using the ADM7171 and ran this failure twice now where these LDOs. These are failing while sealed in vacuum and they are being temperature regulated all data shows these chips are not experiencing heat beyond the maximum rating or any ESD when they are failing, yet when we remove them the EN pin has been shorted to ground ~6 ohms, diode testing shows 0V between the pins in both directions. Is there anything i might be missing that is causing this failure?

  • Hi heke,

The EN pin is simply driven by being shorted to the VIN and VIN1 pins as we would like startup with power to VIN. The source for VIN is outside of the vacuum chamber if it is important. I did notice that the Soft Start capacitance was incorrectly specified to 4.7uF, instead of 4.7nF I don't expect it to cause any issues but I'll mention it just in case its important.

  • Hi Will,

As the EN signal is generated outside the chamber, one could assume that the signal wiring is considerably long. In such case the EN signal is not effectively shorted to VIN, thus would require its own ESD/voltage protection.

    Cheers, heke

  • Hi Heke,

I was unclear on this sorry for that the EN is shorted to the supply pin at the chip not out of vacuum they are connected to the same 6V supply line, I've taken a screen shot of the board files to show how the circuit is laid out on those pins.
