MAX6495 not fully enhancing mosfet

Category: Hardware
Product Number: MAX6495

Hello,

I have an issue with the MAX6495, after several days of operation. The device stops fully enhancing the external FET resulting in a large voltage drop across it preventing downstream devices from powering up.

The input voltage is 48V with the overvoltage threshold set to 52.9V.

I see the supply voltage as 48.6V, but after the FET the voltage drops to 46.6V.

I have tried to debug the issue by fully unsoldering the top side OVSET resistor on the OVSET divider and the issue remains.

The voltage at OVSET with the top resistor removed is 0.02V.

The voltage at GATE is 48.5V.

nSHDN is pulled high.

Below is the schematic I am using.

The intended application is overvoltage protection for downstream Lithium Ion battery chargers.

The input voltage is wired to a connector which is often times hot plugged and hot unplugged with currents up to 10A flowing through the external FET of the MAX6495.

Any help is appreciated.

Cheers,

K
