LTC1153 negative supply voltage?

Category: Datasheet/Specs
Product Number: LTC1153

The LTC1153 datasheets states on page 5:

"The supply pin of the LTC1153 should never be forced below ground as this may result in permanent damage to the device. A 300Ω resistor should be inserted in series with the ground pin if negative supply voltage transients are anticipated."

We have a design that does not include this 300 Ohm resistor. However, when the user connects a reversed polarity supply, the supply pin may go to -0.85V.

My gutt feeling is that this low negative voltage should not do any short or long term harm. Technically, however, it is "below ground", of course. Can anybody comment on this and/or explain why this sentence is in the datasheet of this part, while it cannot be found in most other parts (which are not allowed to have a negative supply much below ground, of course...)?

Thomas
