LT8602 max current for OUT2

Category: Hardware
Product Number: LT8602
Software Version: N/A

Hi there!

I am considering the LT8602 for a new design where I need a quad-output pmic for a radar application, and searching parts I arrived this device that could fit my application, but there is something I don't understand from the datasheet.

In the first page of the datasheet, I can see the max. current is 1,5A for OUT1, 2,5A for OUT2 and 1,8A for OUT3 and OUT4, but, when I see the typical application schematic, I see the OUT2 is used as input for VIN3 and VIN4 and in the output current, OUT2 is marked as 2,5A less the current of IN3 and IN4. This makes me think that the 1,8A is not reachable in both outputs (as 1,8+1,8 is greater than 2,5 if vout3 and Vout 4 are high enough >> Pout can't be greater than Pin) and using this config can limit a lot the current output available from OUT2.

As an example, imagine I need 4 different voltages: 1V, 1,2V, 1,8V and 3,3V. I can use OUT2 as th 3,3V so, with this output I must use 3,3V as input of 1V and 1,2V for example. This way, the maximum output power I can have in the 3,3V (OUT2) is 3,3V * 2,5A = 8,25W

Considering an efficiency for the LV lines of 80%, and both lines working at 1,8A >> 1V*1,8A = 1,8W + 1,2V*1,8W=2,16W >> the total power of the LV channels will be about 4W

Which is 5W from the 3,3V line applying the efficiency. This will mean I will have about 3,25W available in the 3,3V line >> about 1A avalable for this voltage rail.

Are all this thoughts ok?

Hello,

Remember that this is a buck regulator. Input current < Output current.

Your computation is wrong. Please refer below. This is considering 80% efficiency.

  • Hey Jhun!

Yes, as you said, input current use to be lower than the output current but, anyway, the 2,5A channel can be highly reduced if the consumption of the other outputs are high. The max. Pin is 3,3 * 2,5A = 8,25W.

To this 8,25W we have to apply the 0,8 efficiency >> max. Pout = 8,25W * 0,8 = 6,6W with out 3 and 4. is that ok? so with the current specified of 1,8A for each output, Pout3 = 1,8W and Pout4 = 2,16W. Both outputs are 3,96W. Taking into account the efficiency, this is Pin=4,95W with let me about 3W for the Out2. I can't see your calculous in the spreadsheet and where those values of I come from.. ¿?
