STEP-UP converter 5v-12v ADP1612/13

Category: Hardware
Product Number: ADP1612/13

Hi, I'm currently working on a project for production where I need a step-up converter from 5v (this voltage comes from a step-down voltage regulator) to at least 12V. I'm using the 12v to power 4 RGB LEDs, as some point all the LEDs will be On, and since each red, green and blue LEDs will draw about 15ma-20ma = let's say 20ma*3 =60ma, I would need at least 100ma output from the converter which is no problem to find one with the output current I need. However, I'm using a 9V, 150ma power supply. I came across thisADP1612/13 voltage convertor which I implemented using the application circuit on the datasheet shown below, but I failed to realize that the efficiency at very low loads of let's say 10-15 ma is very low close to 70% because there will be moments where only one RGB light let' says red will be on at 10ma-20ma and the draw current from the source supply will increase as the load current increase, but at low loads, the efficiency decreases. In other words, there will be moments where all the RGB lights will be on, others were only 1(red) or 2(red and green) will be on or all of them off (no load).  It looks like the ADP1612/13 will not be the best to use for what I'm trying to accomplish, since my power supply can only deliver 150ma, and I'm already using some of that current to power other parts of my circuit and it looks that I will be running almost at the limit of my total current even at small loads like 20-40ma. Is there alternatives of a 5v to 12V IC similar to this ADP1612/13, but with higher efficiency at low loads and low input currents? Since I'm stepping the voltage more than double the input current will be high as the load current increases, again are there ICs similar to this IC with the same amount of components that maybe I can use the 9V coming from the power adaptor instead of the step 5V voltage regulator, therefore the step up will be less only 3 vlots more. Thank you, for the support.
