[URGENT] LTM8048 Withstand voltage

Category: Software
Product Number: LTM8048

Hi,

I'm a DFAE in Japan. Our customer is considering the circuit specifications for withstand voltage and needs to hurry to answer the following questions:
1. If between Vout1 or Vout2 and Vout- are overvoltage than ABSOLUTE MAXIMUM RATINGS, will the LTM8048 break in short mode or open mode?
2. What is the good voltage to always apply between GND and Vout1, GND and Vout2, GND and Vout-, Vin and Vout1, Vin and Vout2 and Vin and Vout-? What kind of failure mode will occur if the voltage is exceeded?

Thank you very much in advance.

Regards,

Hiroyuki

  • Hello Hiroyuki-

    1. It could fail either short or open.  The internal IC (VOUT2) and/or diode (VOUT1) could “melt” if over-voltaged.  The failure mode would be unpredictable.  We typically spec the part with margin, but that should not be relied upon and is not guaranteed as we do not test beyond the abs max in the datasheet.
    2. Voltage ratings
      1. Isolation Voltage Rating: 725Vdc, 1 sec. each polarity
    1. all pins on input side are shorted together and all pins on output side are shorted together making it an effective 2-terminal device for the hi-pot test.
      1. Working Voltage: up to 160Vrms -> Per UL 60950-1 standard Table 2N -> Pollution degree 2 for printed circuit boards (0.44mm typical internal creepage)
  • Hello,

Thank you very much for your reply. But I don't understand A2 below

    1. all pins on input side are shorted together and all pins on output side are shorted together making it an effective 2-terminal device for the hi-pot test.

Which pin does the working voltage refer to? I don't have a document about UL60950-1.

    Regards,

    Hiroyuki

  • It refers to the voltage between any input side pin and any output side pin as along as all abs max requirements are not violated.
