ADP323 - Fall back connection

Hello,

My name is Meir and I am DFAE.

Sensible Medical, one of my customers, is interested in ADP323 for medical application.

They would like to connect 2 LDO modules in parallel, and one of them will be a fall back in case of a first will not have enough current.

Is it possible to do it?

Could you recommend how to connect these modules?

Thanks,

Meir

  • Meir,

I am not sure I understand you exact use case, are you interested in using 2 channels of the same ADP323 or 2 separate ADP323.

Using 2 channels on the same IC and parallel them, although not ideal, can be done. In fact we used to recommend that in the datasheet since the LDOs use the same reference. Unfortunately the performance is not quite as good as using a single LDO already rated for more current. This is because it's PSRR is not optimized when one of the LDO is most likely operating at it's current limit.

Please refer to this other discussion, you may still be able to find an old rev of the datasheet somewhere.

Please let me know about ADP223.

The ADP223 is very similar to the ADP323

If you need more current you could consider the ADM7170 (500mA) and ADM7171 (1A). They are pin compatible and if 500mA is not enough you can switch to the ADM7171.

    Best regards,

    LucaV
