LTC4071 in Parallel

When running multiple LTC4071's in parallel for multiple cells does each LTC4071 need its own current limiting resistor? It seems when they are paralleled that each resistor ends up parallel as well. How do I achieve proper current limiting when running multiple LTC4071s in parallel?

Thank You

  • You probably do not want to use LTC4071s directly in parallel.  Consider 2 LTC4071s in parallel sharing a single resistor to the power source.  One LTC4071 regulates to 3.98V, the other to 4.02V due to part-to-part variation, with both parts in spec.  The LTC4071 with the lower regulation voltage will hog all the current until the voltage at the VCC pin rises to 4.02V.  Only then will the higher-voltage part begin to conduct.

It should be possible to add 1Ω "ballast" resistors in series with the LTC4071 to help the LTC4071s to share current better.  Voltage regulation across the load range will suffer slightly.  I have attached an LTspice *hypothetical* circuit paralleling 2 LTC4071 parts.  A 5mV difference in regulation voltage is simulated by adding a 5mV voltage source in the ground connection of one of the LTC4071.
