ADM1178 - Can it be turned on and off via I2C?

Hi,

We are planing to use the ADM1178 Hot swap controller in a new design and want to control it fully via the I2C interface. The Datasheet does not provide enough information if this is possible.

Questions:

1. If the ON Pin is always grounded (FET = off), can it be turned On and Off via an I2C command without using the ON pin?

In case this can be done, then I have the following questions:

2. If the FET is turned on via a Software command via I2C and then the ON pin is toggled high and low, will the FET turn off or has the Software command priority?

3. How does the Hardware pin interact with the Software On/Off Command?

  • I know this was a trivial question I was asking above but I would need to buy the EVAL Board just to get it answered. There is no clear and explicit description in the datasheet.

    The only hint is Table 11. CONTROL Register Operations:
    SWOFF LSB, forces the hot swap operation off. Equivalent to deasserting the ON pin.

    Can anybody tell me if the 1178 can be turned ON and OFF just by clearing/setting this flag without using the ON-Pin at all???

  • Hi Fred,

    the ADM1178 can be controlled by S/W but the ON pin has priority to disable. So if you keep ON pin high then you should be able to use command register to to toggle on and off. Sorry it took you so long to get a response... not sure why i only just go these?
